which works to improve the social abilities of orphans, for young school children, as part of the project “Listening to Children”
“We Can Do It!”, which is working to improve the social abilities of young school children – those who are cared for in educational institutions (i.e. orphans and social orphans). The project has been put together with research on the personal and social features of an abandoned child’s development, which helps us to consider what the most important stage in the process of a child’s social growth is, and what the necessary conditions are for adapting and integrating such a child into society. The project has been structured to include 64 series of schemes, four of which are part of the “Rights and Responsibilities” programme. The initiative has been devised for pedagogues, psychologists, professionals at educational institutions and those taking special courses. The guidebook has been published as part of the partnership programme between the EU and Russia (Institutional Building Partnership Programme, IBPP). |

“We Can Do It!”, which is working to improve the social abilities of young school children – those who are cared for in educational institutions (i.e. orphans and social orphans). The project includes 64 series of schemes, six of which are part of the “A Right’s Protection System” programme. These have been used to make gradual improvement to the social skills of children in case who have 1-2 years before they have to leave their institutions. This is intended to lower the risk of the individual becoming excluded from society during the first stages of readapting to life outside an institution. Important facets of the programme include the text books on related themes which are designed for those in care, additional information for the coordinator, methodological assistance on the programme and illustrated guides which help the coordinator prepare for a particular scheme. The programme has been devised for pedagogues, psychologists, professionals at educational institutions and those taking special courses.

“Listening to Children”. A Film Manual |
|
|
|
|

|
Improving children’s social skills is a task of extreme importance, especially when it comes to orphans. The authors of the manual propose that, as well as the traditional methods used in psychological work with children, the collective viewing and discussion of films is another method which can be used for the same purpose. The essence of their argument is children’s rights; the principal is children’s involvement. Such activities help to build trusting relationships with children, to discuss issues which are important to children in a safe and natural atmosphere and to draw attention to a child’s opinion. An emotional connection and identification with the protagonists of these films can give children a unique opportunity to realize who they are and to acquire invaluable personal experience as they learn what the UN Convention on Child Rights is all about.
The manual contains a list of films which are recommended as ideal for working with children and teenagers, together with a description of different mechanisms and specific activities, which can be altered accordingly and used in the work done with children when the films are discussed.
The publication is intended for the use of psychologists, teachers, carers, social pedagogues and those who work in orphanages. The guidebook has been published as part of the partnership programme between the EU and Russia (Institutional Building Partnership Programme, IBPP). |

By N. V. Vladimirova and H. Spanjaard, Ìoscow:Genesis, 2008.
This book focuses on the problems of social integration of children in institutions and the social adaptation of institution graduates. The authors discuss the creation of social support networks for children without parental care or protection.
These networks include the professional meetings, the media, social organizations and other members of society who are prepared to support and develop social partnership relations. It is also important that a child’s right to individuality and belonging to the system or family with which he/she is associated is respected. A child’s previous contacts, in the case of loss of a family member, should not be broken but remain supported.
In the Appendix is a section containing documents, including legal documents, which are essential to graduates and specific materials for working with children in institutions and graduates.
The book, published by WCF as part of the Step by Step project and financed by the European Commission and MiraMed, is aimed at social pedagogues, carers and psychologists. | |
